The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra currently tops the DxOMark list of the world's best camera smartphones. Xiaomi is proud of this phone, so the team responsible for the phone has published a detailed article explaining how the cameras work to achieve the best possible performance.


The main camera houses a 48MP sensor that can perform single-frame HDR processing on the sensor itself. Basically, the pixels are grouped into three categories that include short, medium, and long exposures. It's combined as an HDR signal where the sensor reads it line by line.


Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is the first Xiaomi phone that can record HDR10 video thanks to the processing that takes place at the same sensor level. Moreover, it houses an 8-element lens, which reduces aberrations as much as possible. Every element added to the lens makes the production process more difficult and more expensive.


Improving the telephoto camera performance was also a challenge. The telephoto camera in the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra phone contains a 48-megapixel sensor with a large size of 1 / 2.32 inch. This sensor would have made the camera unit too thick to fit into the body of the phone, so Xiaomi had to use a D-cut lens to shrink it. D-cut lenses make optical image stabilization more difficult, so it took several tries for the engineers to get it to work properly.


The wide-angle camera in the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra phone includes a 128-degree wide-angle lens, knowing that this camera uses a seven-element lens to reduce distortion, especially at the edges of the image. Reducing lens distortion improves accuracy, otherwise distortion will have to be corrected using software.
