#CancelNetflix compaign launched over a French film

Netflix is facing boycott campaigns as well as angry reactions on social media after the French movie “Cuties” premiered on the streaming platform.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and its story centers on an 11-year-old girl who lives in Paris who wants to join a dance group of three other girls from her neighborhood.

Despite her conservative upbringing and the strict rules of her Senegalese family, she revolts against her parents and joins the group.

The movie poster in the US sparked internet outrage in August, with critics saying it was highlighting the sexualization of girls and young women.

Thousands of people called for a boycott of the movie, and boycott campaigns escalated with the hashtag #CancellNetflix on the Twitter platform, but Netflix urged critics to watch the movie.

The platform lost $ 9 billion in market value after launching the # CancelNetflix hashtag, and one person said: Building a reputation takes years, but it takes minutes to destroy it.

A Netflix spokesperson said in a statement that the film is a social illustration against the sexualization of children, it is award winning and explains the pressure young girls face on social media and from society in general, and we encourage anyone interested in these issues to watch it.

Politicians have released public statements against Netflix and the movie itself, and the National Center for Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) and Parents' Television Council (PTC) released statements about the movie earlier this week, condemning the platform's broadcast of the movie.

Texas Rep. Matt Schaefer tweeted about the movie, writing: "I have asked Texas Attorney General Paxton's office to investigate the netflix film "Cuties" for possible violations of child exploitation and child pornography laws."

Senator Josh Hawley wrote a letter to the CEO of Netflix, calling for the immediate removal of the film from the streaming platform.

A petition on change.org, signed by more than 600,000 people, urges people to cancel their Netflix subscriptions because of the movie, which many say has inappropriate content.

The petition says: Netflix is no longer the family friendly streaming service I one believed it to be!.
