Apple is looking to compete with Google by creating a new search engine

A new report hints that Apple is working on a new project linked to an entire new search engine. The information arrives after several developers noticed increased activity by Applebot from Apple in their website logs.

Apple also is likely focused on improving Siri and Spotlight's search results. According to the Mac rumors in the report, Applebot is starting to show a marked increase in activity. This caused many people to take to Twitter to share their thoughts about it as well.

John Henshaw, founder of Coywolf, also posted to his blog after noticing that Apple's web crawler regularly visited his websites. For those unaware, Applebot works similarly to any other web crawler and scans the web to determine how search results are ranked. This depends on various factors, including user interaction, relevance, and more. Consequently, the increased activity has sparked new speculation about a new search engine from Apple.

At the moment, it seems unlikely that Apple will actually focus on developing a search engine since it is promoting itself as a privacy-focused brand that works without any ads. But, examples like DuckDuckGo showed that these search engines exist and can operate without advertising revenue or data-driven business models.
