Apple officially started assembling the iPhone SE 2020 in India

Apple had been looking to India in an effort to diversify its iPhone production lines and provide duty-free units for the domestic market. After it started producing the first generation iPhone SE in India in 2017, Apple decided over the following years to strengthen its efforts by manufacturing other models in the country such as the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone XR, and the iPhone 11 also recently.

As of this week, Apple is also manufacturing the iPhone SE 2020 in India, making it the sixth iPhone in Apple's lineup to be manufactured in India. This news was confirmed by Apple itself in a statement sent to local media. The price of the home-made iPhone SE 2020 has now been reduced to INR 36k as part of the Apple Days event although the price is expected to drop even lower as it is now locally made. IPhone SE 2020 assembled in India is expected to hit store shelves in the coming weeks.

One of the main incentives for smartphone assembly in India is to avoid paying high import duties that include the 20 percent import tax. Apple is said to be interested in moving up to 20 percent of iPhone production lines from China to India in the near future.
